Direct to garment printing: your questions answered

We’ve recently invested in a direct to garment (DTG) printer. But what is DTG printing? How does it work and how long does it last? We answer the most popular questions about this style of clothing printing…

What is direct to garment printing?

Direct to garment printing is a method of printing directly onto items of clothing or other fabric garments.

Very similar to a normal inkjet printer, a DTG printer applies ink directly onto the fibres of the material. Easier to set up than screen printing, direct to garment printing is fast, full colour and able to make high quality personalised clothing.

Is direct to garment printing good quality?

DTG printing produces great looking results which are comparable to those which are screen printed. Able to print intricate designs and photographs, direct-to-garment looks great and is cost-effective for smaller print runs.

How long does direct to garment printing last?

Direct to garment printing is valid for the life of the garment.

DTG printing vs sublimation vs screen printing

Direct to garment printing is a relatively new method of printing onto t-shirts and other garments. Other, more established methods include screen printing and dye sublimation.

Screen printing involves screens being created for each of the CMYK colours. A layer of each ink is then pulled over the screen or stencil, adhering to the material.

Sublimation printing is where ink is printed onto special sheets of paper that are then placed onto the garment. When heat is applied, the ink is transferred onto the material.

The best printing method for your project will depend on the design, the material it is being printed onto and the quantity. Speak to our print team to discover the best method for your print job.

Does DTG printing fade?

Unlike transfer printing, garments that are printed using DTG printers do not fade immediately after washing. Over time, they will fade, however, which makes them popular for T-shirts where a vintage look is required.
