Your website is losing you business while you sleep

The businesses that fix this first will have a quiet advantage over everyone who waits.

You had a customer in last week. Straightforward job, done well, they were happy with the result. As they left, they mentioned a colleague who needed something similar. “I’ll point them your way,” they said.

Two days later, that colleague searches for you online.

They find a website that loads slowly on their phone, has slightly out-of-date information on it, and a contact form that looks like it may or may not still work. They spend thirty seconds on it, decide they are not confident, and search again.

You never knew they looked. You certainly never knew they left.

This is not a story about bad luck. It is a story about a website that was built for a moment in time, and that moment has passed.

1. The first impression you cannot control

For someone who has never dealt with you before, your website is the first thing they see. Not your team, not your work, not the reputation you have built locally over years.

Just the website.

And if that website looks like it has not been touched since 2019, loads awkwardly on a phone, or makes it unclear what you actually do and where you are based – then a proportion of people who would have become good customers simply do not call. They move on. You never know it happened.

Good web design does three things well. It loads quickly on any device. It tells visitors immediately what you do and why they should choose you. And it makes the next step – calling, emailing, requesting a quote – obvious and easy.

Most small business websites are not doing all three.

2. The search problem nobody talks about

Being easy to find when someone already knows your name is the low bar.

The higher bar is appearing when someone searches for what you do – “accountant in Bury St Edmunds,” “solicitor Suffolk,” “commercial cleaning Ipswich” – and does not have a specific company in mind yet.

That is a Google problem, and it is solvable. But the solution requires a website Google can read, trust, and rank. Pages that load fast. Content written in the language your customers actually search. A Google Business profile that matches what your site says.

Most local businesses are not competing hard for this. Which means the gap is there, and closing it now costs considerably less than closing it once a competitor has already done it.

3. What it is actually costing you

There is a calculation worth doing honestly.

How many new customers find you through search each month? For most businesses, the honest answer is: not many. Most new work comes through referrals, repeat orders, and word of mouth. Which feels sustainable, until the repeat customers retire, consolidate, or move on – and the pipeline of new enquiries is not there to replace them.

A website that works properly is not a luxury. It is the thing that means a potential customer, who has never heard of you but is looking for exactly what you offer, finds you instead of someone else.

The cost of getting it right is a one-time investment. The cost of getting it wrong is every customer who looks, does not like what they see, and calls someone else.

4. What we can do about it

At Kall Kwik Bury St Edmunds, we work with local businesses on print and design every day. We know what great looks like, and we know how to create something that properly represents a business.

That extends to website design and support. We work with businesses across Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk to build sites that load well, read well, and show up in the right searches. We can take an honest look at what your current site is doing well and where it is working against you. And if it needs work – better structure, clearer messaging, faster loading, stronger search visibility – we can help with that too.

No jargon. No long-winded proposals. Just practical work that makes your business easier to find and easier to choose.
