Why the web design team at Kall Kwik Bury St Edmunds never use templates

You’ve made the decision that your website needs an overhaul. It’s dated and needs modernising. So, you search the internet for local web design services and arrange a meeting with the one who seems the best value for money. You tell them you want your site to stand out from the competition. To be easy to manage, adaptable and able to grow with your company. Oh, and you want it to rank highly on Google.

The web design company suggests using a template.

Here’s why you should tell them to go jump in a river…

Why we at Kall Kwik don’t like web design templates…

First thing first. At Kall Kwik we never use templates.

Do they have a place in web design? Yes.

Are they for us? No, thank you.

That’s because we know their limitations and don’t want to be inhibited by them. We know they’re targeted by hackers. We know they can be slow to load. We know they’re not optimised for search engines. And we know lots of people employ the same theme and by default end up with similar looking sites.

Therefore, all our sites are coded in-house by our web developers.

This may make us more expensive than some website designers and may mean our websites take longer to develop.

But what you get in return is more than worth it.

Why we code all our websites in-house

A truly bespoke website has to be coded from the ground up to make it unique. With a theme, your design and layout are limited. With a bespoke site, you start with a blank page. The only limitations to your design, your own timescales and budgets.

At your initial meeting, our web team will talk through your objectives, your chosen audience, the elements your pages must have and the keywords you want to be found for. We’ll then sketch out designs for your new website based on your needs.

When you’ve chosen the elements you like, we’ll set to work creating a site that is exclusive to you and your business. Because it’s coded from scratch, it will be designed with search engines in mind and will have quick loading times.

Unlike themes which are filled with fonts, plugins and features, most of which you’ll probably never want or need, our sites only have the code needed to run. This means they’ll load almost instantaneously. Another tick in the SEO box.

Of course, developing a website in this way is a skill. Our web developers code in a range of languages, which seem like gibberish to the uninitiated. A web designer who offers themes is probably also lacking these skills needed to code a complex website. If anything goes wrong with your site, they may not be best placed to support you. Our team are. And we will.

When should I use a theme?

We said there is a place for themes and there are. If you need your website to be live in days use a theme. If your budget is low, a theme can get you online. If your website is an extra rather than a necessity for your business, then a theme will suffice too.

But, if you’re serious about your web offering. If you want a website that converts visitors into customers and if you want search engines to acknowledge you, you’ll need a bespoke website. And for that you’ll need the team at Kall Kwik.
